Our professor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Physics and former President (2009-2021) Prof. Umran S.İnan has been honored with the John Adam Fleming Medal by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), presented to one esteemed scientist every year since 1962 (https://www.agu.org/honors/fleming). Widely recognized for his outstanding contributions in the fields of geophysics, near-space, ionospheric and atmospheric physics, radiation belts, electromagnetic wave-particle interactions, and very low-frequency radio science, Prof. İnan was awarded this significant medal in recognition of his pioneering discoveries and technical leadership in lightning-ionosphere coupling and magnetospheric wave-particle interactions.

Prof. İnan is a Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he served on the faculty for more than 30 years. He also served as the Director of the Space, Telecommunications & Radioscience Laboratory for 15 years before becoming the President of Koç University. Prof. İnan, whose research group at Stanford University is conducting observations from over 50 different spots on seven continents and also from a variety of world-orbiting satellites, is the recipient of the following awards:

• 1998 Stanford University Tau Beta Pi Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching
• 2007 Stanford University Allan V. Cox Medal for Faculty Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research
• Several Group Achievement Awards from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the European Space Agency Antarctic Service Medal of the U.S.
• 2008 Appleton Prize from URSI and the Royal Society
• 2010 Special Science Award from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey
• Recipient of the Mustafa Prize granted by the Mustafa Science Foundation
